Astound Artist Kelly Breemer Talks Us Through The Process Of Designing Her Baby Milestone Cards For Silver Dolphin

Last summer, Silver Dolphin contacted me through my Astound agent Aurora, for a new super cute project: Baby Milestone Cards! This would become a box of 26 cards that each had a different milestone for babies on them such as: ‘I took my first steps’, ‘I’m 3 months old’, ‘I had my first playdate today’.

At that time I was also illustrating a book with Silver Dolphin, which is how they knew my work, and saw that I also doing lettering and typography. Their idea was to have me both design the illustrations and the lettering for these cards. I thought it was a great idea as these were two styles I wanted to combine! So this was the perfect way!

Silver Dolphin provided me with a list of 26 milestones, and I got to sketching! First we worked on 2 cards to make the style and color palette right. The first cards to try out were ‘I’m one month old today’ and ‘I stood up for the first time today’. We decided on a Jewel Tone color palette. A lot of baby products have very soft pastel colors, and Silver Dolphin thought this would be an original choice and make the cards really stand out. After the first two designs were made, I started sketching on the rest of the cards.

Because the time frame on this project was pretty short, my following weeks were filled with drawing for these cards. There are worse days! It was so much fun. I work on my iPad Pro in the drawing program Procreate, which makes me very flexible. Working from home, in the train, at a friends place, or in a cafe – its the freelance illustrator life!

I really liked working on this project: I was given clear instructions BUT also still had a lot of freedom to make my own choices. For example, Silver Dolphin gave me a list of the 26 cards, and named some examples of animals that they would love to see illustrated. But I got to decide myself which animal I would draw where – so I tried to make each title and animal fit well together. For example: I know elephants can give themselves baths with their trunks, so I wanted to use that for the card “I had my first bath today”. I thought of a leopard as an animal thats good at crawling, and a parrot would be perfect for the first word-card. For “I laughed for the first time” I chose a playful monkey, and for the card of “I got my first tooth today” I immediately thought of a hippo, since hippo’s are often illustrated with these cartoony front teeth. Lots of room for some fun associations.

Also color wise, it was a fun challenge too. Some animals worked really well with a background color that was complementary to their own. For instance, a tiger and a blue background, or a dark purple background with an orange/brown colored bear or squirrel!

Finally, we made the box. I really liked that we did this last because I think the box is super important as it is the first thing to be seen and is on constant display. Having made the box first I was able to choose some of my favourite elements such as color combinations, plants, flowers, animals and fonts – all put together to make the box! There was quite a short timeframe so  I worked on this pretty intensely. It also meant that I got very “attached” to the cards and this project. It was not a project that was slow paced, spread out over time. It was more like an adrenaline rush!

This all took place in the summer of 2018. Then, the waiting began until they were printed! And a few weeks ago, I got the Baby Milestone Cards sent to my house, which was just like opening a present. Everything looks so wonderful, the quality is great. The feeling of holding your own illustrations in your hand is still super cool (and still a bit weird!)

So that was a little peek into my process and the story behind some of my designs!

The cards will be released in March by Silver Dolphin.

Thanks a lot to Astound and Silver Dolphin!
