A New Yorker at heart, but now residing in a suburb of Philadelphia, Barbara (Zuckerman) Chotiner studied communication design & illustration at Syracuse University and later received her MFA from the University of the Arts in book arts + printmaking.
Her parents were both teachers (of math and English) and she grew up in a house filled with books. She sees her work as a fusion of math (with its rules & repetition) and English (fluidity & freedom). Through a commingling of both analog and digital methods, Barb combines textures, color, shapes and whimsical abstract forms in a modern, sophisticated way. Inspired by cities, details in nature, and Scandinavian design, Barb spends her days drawing, making monoprints, scanning and taking out excessive amounts of beautifully ilustrated children’s books from the library (only a few of which are actually for her two smallish children).
Her favorite store in the world is Kinokuniya in NYC. With her artwork, she believes in organizing chaos and making people smile.
