Dahlia El Broul
Dahlia El Broul was born and raised in Manhattan. Her artistic journey was shaped by her unique upbringing as the daughter of two NYC yellow taxi drivers. Sketching from the passenger seat during her childhood, the vibrant cityscape sparked her fascination with colour and movement. Influenced by illustrators and writers such as Maurice Sendak and Madeline L’Engle, her creative path was set. Dahlia went on to earn a BFA in Fine Art and Illustration from FIT and an MA from Aalto University in Curating and Art Mediation. Now residing in Helsinki, Dahlia’s artwork is a testament to her emotional connection with her audience. Her pieces, rendered primarily in oil paint and pastels, blend effective colour palettes with mixed media techniques. For many years, she has been interested in creating work that centers on multi-positional cultural identities through the lens of intersectional feminism. With bands such as Radiohead and Rilo Kiley as her creative companions, Dahlia El Broul continues to infuse joy, contemplation, and emotion into her captivating works. Beyond her art, Dahlia is a member of the arts organization Catalysti, advocating for inclusion and equity in the cultural field in Finland. Outside her studio, she finds solace in swimming, forest exploration and foraging, and cherishing her cat, Penny.
